Conférence de Laura Huey - The Commodification of Canadian Criminology : What Does the Proliferation of Applied Criminology Programs Mean for the Discipline’s Future ?

La Chaire de recherche du Canada en surveillance et construction sociale du risque vous invite à la conférence de Laura Huey intitulée "The Commodification of Canadian Criminology : What Does the Proliferation of Applied Criminology Programs Mean for the Discipline’s Future ?"

Over the past few years we have witnessed a marked rise in the number of Canadian colleges and Universities marketing applied criminology to undergraduates. From courses in ‘problem management in the criminal justice system’ to programs that promise potential students the opportunity to “discover a rewarding career in policing, community crime prevention programs, community corrections …”, this rise heralds a decided shift away from the teaching and practice of criminology as discipline to criminology as consumable commodity. In this article, the author traces the contours of this shift through an analysis of larger patterns of corporatization within higher learning. It is argued that criminology students today are increasingly being treated as consumers by institutions that emphasize practical skills, technical innovation and employability, at the risk of producing little more than trained technologists for the criminal justice industry. Adverse consequences of this process for both students and the discipline are discussed.
