The development in political interest

Variance of political interest is very high: some people are much more interested in politics than others. Why? The reasons for individual-level differences in political interest are unclear, but have received little attention in political science research. This project uses panel data to understand when and why people’s interest levels change.

The analysis uses longitudinal data in which the same people are observed repeatedly over the course of years and decades. Short of randomly assigning people, panel data represent the most promising analytical tool to disentangle questions of causality. Panel data make it possible to account for people’s political interest before a hypothesized cause of higher interest occurs and examine if an independent and sustained increase in political interest follows. I assess how changes in education, work status, and household income affect political interest of individual panelists. Special attention is devoted to difference between fixed-effects and first-difference estimators. I also examine the impact of potentially endogenous causes of political interest, such as group membership or partisanship.
