In this talk, Colin Bennett reviews the multi-pronged strategy to bring political parties within the ambit of Canadian federal privacy law, analyzing the parliamentary pressure, the litigation, the targeted complaints to regulators, and the public and media advocacy. He also reviews and critiques the various stated justifications for treating parties as exceptional organizations. Privacy regulation is not just about privacy, however. The regulation of the conditions under which personal data might be collected, processed and distributed by, and for, political parties allows us to render contemporary data-driven elections more transparent, and thereby combat some of the worst effects of contemporary digital campaigning.

Depuis plus de trente ans, les recherches du professeur Bennett portent sur l'impact des technologies de surveillance et sur l'analyse comparative de la gouvernance de la protection de la vie privée aux niveaux national et international. En plus de nombreux articles et journaux, il a publié sept livres sur ces sujets, dont The Governance of Privacy (MIT Press, 2006), ainsi que des rapports politiques pour des organisations nationales et internationales.
