RDV en science politique: Listening for Alarm Bells: Democratic Backsliding in Canada?

Democracies are in decline across the globe, even in countries often assumed to be stable and resilient. To what extent is Canada at risk? We focus on evaluating democratic backsliding in terms of support for political violence, in this case defined as actions intended to intimidate, across two dimensions – the act and the actor. While we find only modest levels of support for any type of political violence, we do see some interesting trends across partisanship and ideology.

Biography 
 

Laura B. Stephenson is Professor of Political Science at The University of Western Ontario. She co-directs of the Consortium on Electoral Democracy and was part of the 2015-2021 Canadian Election Study (CES) teams. She studies elections and political behaviour, especially understanding how institutions and context influence attitudes, electoral preferences, and engagement with politics. She has published in several journals and is co-author of Electing a Mega-Mayor (University of Toronto Press, 2021), Provincial Battles, National Prize? Elections in a Federal State (McGill-Queen’s University Press, 2019) and Fighting for Votes: Parties, the Media, and Voters in an Ontario Election (UBC Press, 2015).
