Titre de la thèse : Cardiovascular Autonomic Dysfunction and Insomnia

During my postdoctoral fellowship, my research interests evolved to include physiological, psychosocial, and behavioral determinants of health within the field of behavioral sleep medicine, specifically within the context of insomnia. Using data from a clinical trial, I investigated heart rate variability over the course of a non-pharmaceutical insomnia treatment (i.e., cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia). Also, I have investigated lifestyle and health-care seeking/maintenance behaviours in adults with sleep disorders. I conducted a number of database projects in which I evaluated psychosocial factors in the context of sleep and health. Specifically, using epidemiological data, I examined the interplay across predisposing traits as well as maladaptive or adaptive behaviors in adults with insomnia. I investigated whether sleep reactivity, a predisposing trait that increases the risk of experiencing situational insomnia under stressful conditions (i.e., after an argument), was prospectively associated with greater risk of developing new-onset insomnia and experiencing chronic insomnia over three years. I also investigated whether adaptive coping styles and social support moderated the incidence of insomnia. Results, published in the Journal of Sleep Research, revealed that sleep reactivity predicted incident and persistent insomnia; however, coping styles and social support did not moderate such relations. More recently, I presented and published data quantifying familial aggregation of insomnia among relatives of prior (e.g., parents), same (e.g., siblings), and successive generations (e.g., offspring) with and without insomnia. This study, selected as the "Editor’s Choice" in SLEEP, was the first and largest Canadian population-based study examining environmental and genetic contributions of insomnia.
